About the new red Vodafone icon

The new famous Vodafone icon “speech” mark element was created by Gary Broadbent in 1997 whilst working as Creative Director for Springpoint, a brand design agency based in London, England.

In 2006, Brand Union adjusted the icon with a 3D effect.

This work was headed up by Glenn Tutsell (who now sadly passed away) and designer Stephen Clarke. They briefed Dalton Maag to create this new font.

Gary Broadbent confirmed to eDigital:

“My idea was to help Vodafone become the world’s leading telco by differentiating them from technology-oriented icons which were prevalent with telcos at the time and take ownership of the concept of ‘talking globally’. My brief was set by Sir Chris Gent, Chairman of Vodafone Group (retired) and Terry Barwick – it was simply ‘to make us look good around cricket pitches’ (Vodafone were to be a sponsor of England cricket, followed by Manchester United and Ferrari)” 

In the process of designing the new Vodafone icon, Mr Broadbent worked alongside Chris Holt (who worked for British Airways and was largely responsible for the BA swoosh rebrand).

The work encompassed everything from brand identity and architecture, strategy, acquisition migration, packaging, advertising, sponsorship and retail design.
