So, while I was writing this article and trying not to spontaneously combust from secondhand colonial cringe 😬🔥, I kept thinking of places that actually honour and celebrate local cultures before colonisation.

A few years ago, I was doing my classic “finding myself by escaping capitalism” trip around the world 💸✈️ and landed in Mexico City.

Finally, Teotihuacan and the National Museum of Anthropology.

I nearly cried.

Or maybe that was the spicy burritos I ate before.

Either way, it was stunning. So much pride, so much history, so many reasons to scream at the next person who says “we all came from somewhere” 🤡🌵⛏️

Then I hit up Colombia 🇨🇴 and saw the legendary Gold Museum in Bogotá, where they have literal Indigenous gold art so beautiful, it makes Cartier look like Etsy jewellery gone wrong 💍🔥.

The Spanish came, saw, and stole everything not nailed down, but hey, at least Bogotá is out here remembering who made it first.

Meanwhile, over in the land of irony, the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Museum in the USA 🇺🇸🖤 is doing a better job of showcasing Indigenous Australian art than half the galleries in actual Australia.

The Art Gallery of NSW? Oh, their Indigenous collection is stored in the basement, next to the broken dehumidifier and forgotten dreams of cultural respect 📦.

Not hidden, just… gently suppressed. Classic.

Sure, we’ve got the Berndt Museum in Perth now (shoutout to the one institution that read the room 📚), but on January 26th, 2022, when the National Museum of Australia had the perfect chance to say literally anything about colonisation, genocide, or the fact that the nation is built on stolen land… they said nothing.
