THE TOP 25 AUSTRALIA DAY HASHTAGS ON INSTAGRAM FOR JANUARY 2026

Australia Day hashtags: When marketers turn one of the world’s biggest genocides into #content. 📲

Using some of the top 25 #AustraliaDay-related hashtags is one of the biggest cultural insensitivities. 🚫🇦🇺

You (the marketer) desperately trying to figure out how to monetise a day that commemorates the beginning of one of history’s longest-running cultural genocides without getting fined or sacked. 💻🧠🔥

You are here, ready to hunt for trending tags with the enthusiasm of your ancestors hunting for gold 👀, except instead of destroying sacred sites, you’re just destroying what’s left of your brand’s credibility one tone-deaf Instagram post at a time. 💔📉📸

It’s like throwing a “Congratulations on Your House Burning Down! 🏚️🎉🔥” party and then wondering why the homeowners aren’t joining the celebration. 🙃

The beautiful cognitive dissonance is watching you craft “patriotic” campaigns around a date that marks the systematic destruction of the world’s oldest continuous culture 🧓🏾⛏️, all while using hashtags like #AustraliaDay 🇦🇺 and #TrueBlue 🐨💙 as if they’re celebrating a sporting victory rather than commemorating the start of 235 years of cultural annihilation. 💀📆

You are about to spend hours analysing engagement rates on #InvasionDay 🏴‍☠️ vs. #SurvivalDay 🖤💛❤️, completely missing the irony that you’re literally using data analytics 📊🤖 to optimise the celebration of historical data erasure 📁

It’s like planning a Holocaust memorial barbecue 🍖✡️ and wondering why people aren’t bringing potato salad. 🥔😐

You’ll create elaborate spreadsheets tracking which patriotic tags perform best 💾📈, building campaigns around “Australian values” 🍺🇦🇺 while systematically ignoring that those values apparently include celebrating the dispossession of Indigenous peoples like it’s a national achievement. 🏆💣

You’ll craft posts about “unity” and “mateship” 🤝🍻 using top trending hashtags, completely oblivious to the fact that their idea of national unity is based on everyone agreeing to pretend that January 26th is about beach barbecues 🌭🏖️ rather than the beginning of frontier wars and stolen generations. ⚔️👶🏾🚫

The tragic comedy peaks when you panic about “political correctness” ruining your Australia Day campaigns 😱📉, as if acknowledging historical genocide is somehow more controversial than celebrating it with influencer partnerships and branded beach balls. 🎈🤡

You’ll workshop slogans like Australia: Love It or Leave It 🇦🇺🚪 while conveniently forgetting that the original inhabitants couldn’t exactly pack up and emigrate to avoid colonisation. 🛶🌍🔒

The hashtag research becomes an exercise in finding the perfect balance between jingoistic nationalism and plausible deniability 🤐⚖️, because nothing says “authentic Australian spirit” like focus-testing your unconscious racial bias. 🎯🤯

Perhaps the most brilliant part of this sad comedy-drama 🎭💔 is that you’ve convinced yourself that slapping #AustraliaDay on your content somehow transforms commercial opportunism into patriotic duty 🤑📢, turning the commemoration of cultural destruction into a sales opportunity that would make used car salesmen weep with admiration. 🚗💼💦

You’re essentially running a marketing campaign for genocide 📣 while calling it a “celebration of Australian heritage” 🏞️🤷which is either the most successful rebranding in history or proof that marketing as a profession has completely lost touch with basic human decency. 🧠🗑️

But hey, at least you’ll have really impressive engagement metrics to show your boss 💅📊, because nothing drives social media interaction quite like accidentally celebrating crimes against humanity with popular Australia Day hashtags and beach-themed emoji. 🏄🇦🇺🔥

#australiaday2025 is predicted to be one of the most popular Australia Day hashtags on Instagram use in 4+ thousand posts.

A Note:

So, while I was writing this article and trying not to spontaneously combust from secondhand colonial cringe 😬🔥, I kept thinking of places that actually honour and celebrate local cultures before colonisation.

You know, the ones that actually existed before boats full of syphilitic Europeans showed up with flags and no permission 🚢

The obvious one?

National Independence Day celebrations around the world 🎆🇲🇽🇮🇳🇿🇦 where countries flex their history of booting out colonisers like it’s the World Cup of anti-imperialism 🥇✊

But I also started thinking of museums.

Not the sad, dusty ones with plaques no one reads, but the badass ones that showcase Indigenous culture like it’s Beyoncé at the Louvre 🎤🖼️

A few years ago, I was doing my classic “finding myself by escaping capitalism” trip around the world 💸✈️ and landed in Mexico City.

Finally, Teotihuacan and the National Museum of Anthropology.

I nearly cried.

Or maybe that was the spicy burritos I ate before.

Either way, it was stunning. So much pride, so much history, so many reasons to scream at the next person who says “we all came from somewhere” 🤡🌵⛏️

Then I hit up Colombia 🇨🇴 and saw the legendary Gold Museum in Bogotá, where they have literal Indigenous gold art so beautiful, it makes Cartier look like Etsy jewellery gone wrong 💍🔥.

The Spanish came, saw, and stole everything not nailed down, but hey, at least Bogotá is out here remembering who made it first.

Meanwhile, over in the land of irony, the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Museum in the USA 🇺🇸🖤 is doing a better job of showcasing Indigenous Australian art than half the galleries in actual Australia.

The Art Gallery of NSW? Oh, their Indigenous collection is stored in the basement, next to the broken dehumidifier and forgotten dreams of cultural respect 📦.

Not hidden, just… gently suppressed. Classic.

Sure, we’ve got the Berndt Museum in Perth now (shoutout to the one institution that read the room 📚), but on January 26th, 2022, when the National Museum of Australia had the perfect chance to say literally anything about colonisation, genocide, or the fact that the nation is built on stolen land… they said nothing. Nada. Crickets 🦗📴

Because apparently, acknowledging a historic invasion is still more controversial than cooking sausages on a beach while playing Men at Work 🎧🌭.

Here’s the real kicker:

If anything is truly “Australian,” it’s the people who lived here for 65,000+ years before anyone showed up with a Union Jack and a superiority complex 🏞️🖤💛❤️

Their culture?

Rich. Deep. Sustainable. Fire-smart. Delicious. Joyful. Sacred.

Everything after that?

Imported. Including the constitution 📜✍️ written by British dudes to protect British dudes, while stepping on everyone else like they were ants in a colonial picnic.

But hey, at least you can post a boomerang of your lamingtons with #Straya while ignoring all that history.

That’s the spirit 🇦🇺💅🔥

When did Australia Day become a Public Holiday?

The 26th of January was made a public holiday in New South Wales in 1836, and Victoria adopted it as a public holiday in 1931.

The 26 January was recognised by all states and territories as Australia Day in 1946, but it was not until 1994 that it was celebrated as a national public holiday.

Since 1960, the winner of the “Australian of the Year” award is announced by the Australian Prime Minister on the eve of 25th of January.

Before you check out the most popular “Australia Day” hashtags for Instagram, let yourself know more about it.

The Australia Day debate on whether to name it differently or change the date may just be a distraction to keep the general public away from what the actual progress should be.

Although it is true that Australia is not the only invaded country in the world, it is also true that — along with Fiji and BotswanaAustralia is the only Commonwealth nation in the world yet to sign a treaty with its First Nations peoples.

One of the massive opportunities and rights we have – as Australians – is to sign a sovereignty treaty

A treaty that offers self-determination and sovereignty to different ethnicities found in Australia must be signed.

Forget the Government’s “Voice to Parliament” proposal and the referendum.

Australian indigenous people already have a voice.

Aboriginal Australians don’t want to continue being asked to assimilate a constitution written by white people.

What indigenous Australians want and deserve is a sovereignty treaty.

When was Australia Day made a public holiday?

January 26 was made a public holiday in Australia in 1994.

WHY AUSTRALIA DAY IS OFFENSIVE FOR INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS

The current Australia Day is offensive to Indigenous Australians because it celebrates the arrival of the first British settlement in Australia in 1788 that brought suffering, slavery and murder to the people who had already lived for 60+ thousand years in Australia.

The 26th of January 1788 was the date Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack (British flag symbol) at Warrane, claiming British sovereignty. Some still believe it marks the arrival of James Cook in 1770, which in reality happened in April.

January 26 is symbolic of the shameful and systemic oppression, racism and exclusion that First Nations people in Australia still face. The colonial project all Australians have been benefiting from is built on blood and “Australia” does not deserve a national holiday in any capacity.

So if your brand is making a celebration of “Australia Day” on January 26, some of your customers may feel it is insulting as it marks the beginning of the widespread oppression, dispossession and genocide of First Nations people.
