WHAT’S A GOOD BOUNCE RATE?

WHAT IS A GOOD BOUNCE RATE?

In Google Analytics or any other web analytics tool a bounce rate means the percentage of people who only visited one page during their session. In Google Analytics it is specifically calculated  as one session with only one page view. The user only open one page in their browser and then user leaves without visiting another page on the same website.

A good website bounce rate is anything below 39% overall.

For key pages of your website I would consider the following:

  • Home page: The bounce rate of your home page should be below 35%. Most of all home pages want people to click on other pages to find out more information about a business.
  • Product pages: same as home page, you should target a bounce rate below 35% as you want people to move to your shopping cart pages.
  • Blog articles: here we are more flexible with the bounce rate as your article might be given the readers what they were looking for and might might not visit other page. This article is an example of users who understand what a good bounce rate is and then might leave. It is important that you encourage them to visit other related content on your website  – as we do at the end of this article –  to decrease your overall bounce rate on your articles.

EARLY SIGNALS YOUR BOUNCE RATE IS NOT GOOD

  • The user experience of your site sucks and users cannot easily navigate on your website.
  • Multiple Google Analytics codes implemented and firing.
  • Website design changes that are affecting the user experience
  • URL re-structure that is taking users to 404 pages (non-existent) pages, and no 301 re-directs implemented.
