HOW TO COMMUNICATE CYCLING BENEFITS TO THE RATIONAL HEALTH-CONSCIOUS CONSUMER

Offering easy-to-understand information about the health benefits of cycling to your customers and employees shows you care for your people.

You can use the below messages when talking about the health benefits of cycling:

  • Cycling is a low-impact exercise. As well as being a cardiovascular exercise that burns calories, it also strengthens your muscles,  particularly your hamstrings, glutes and quads without too much risk of injury. The stronger your muscles are the more calories your body burns.
  • Obesity and weight control. Research suggests you should be burning at least 8,400 kilojoules (about 2,000 calories) a week through exercise. Steady cycling burns about 1,200 kilojoules (about 300 calories) per hour. If you cycle twice a day, the kilojoules burnt soon add up. British research shows that a half-hour bike ride every day will burn nearly five kilograms of fat over a year.
  • Cancer. Many researchers have studied the relationship between exercise and cancer, especially colon and breast cancer. Research has shown that if you cycle, the chance of bowel cancer is reduced. Some evidence suggests that regular cycling reduces the risk of breast cancer.
  • Diabetes. The rate of type 2 diabetes is increasing and is a serious public health concern. Lack of physical activity is thought to be a major reason why people develop this condition. Large-scale research in Finland found that people who cycled for more than 30 minutes per day had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing diabetes.
  • Mental illness. Depression, stress and anxiety can be reduced by regular bike riding. This is due to the effects of the exercise itself and because of the enjoyment that riding a bike can bring.

Over the past year, the Lifeline telephone line has been receiving more calls than at any other time in our 58-year history. There are currently over 3,000 people in crisis reaching out to us every day. That’s a call every 30 seconds”

  • Increased cardiovascular fitness and prevent serious diseases such as stroke and heart attack.
  • Improved joint mobility, strengthened bones and reduce arthritis.
  • Improved posture and coordination
  • Riding a bike is a fun activity for all ages and easy to fit into your daily routine by riding to the shops, park, school or work.
  • Bring you a sense of freedom and connection to new people and places. You can explore national parks, beaches, towns and other places in a more direct way rather than sitting inside a car.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Bicycle began its journey way back in 1816 when temperatures had plummeted around the world, because of the eruption a year earlier of Indonesia’s Mount Tambora. It was among the most violent eruptions on Earth in recorded history, and the fallout of dust and sulphur caused crop failures across Europe. As horses died of starvation, the German inventor Karl von Drais came up with an idea to replace horses with a basic simple – yet powerful – prototype of what is today a bicycle.
  • Bogotá, Colombia offers more than 300 km of bicycle lanes mostly used by poor people who cannot afford public transport.

“Whether you are young or your hair is grey,
Let’s celebrate World Bicycle Day!

Helmet on, find your exciting pathway
Pedal and pump your rate
Eye twinkles won’t be delayed

Keep cycling, do not stop the play
Don’t be afraid
Drivers should give way

When tired, find a shade,
Have a lemonade

You have sweated your toxins away
Most illnesses will be kept at bay

Birds will watch ya
Magpies may attack ya
Flat tyres may find ya
Car doors may slap ya

It should be fine
Just be aware
Alert
Prepared

Last thing:

When riding
Wear natural fibres
Your skin will be smiling!”
